Parcours Aux rythmes de nos origines

With over 25,000 shows, Théâtre St-Denis has attracted more than 66 million spectators since its creation.

On March 4, 1916, the Théâtre St-Denis was inaugurated after two years of construction. At the time, it was the largest theater in Canada, where people went to watch silent films, boulevard comedy and operetta.

From the 1920s onwards, many international orchestras performed here, including La Scala de Milan, conducted by Italian conductor Toscanini, and renowned composers such as Maurice Ravel in 1928.

In the ’30s, film buffs witnessed the birth of talking pictures, and the theater welcomed French cinema in particular.

In 1942, film production was interrupted by the war, and the theater had to diversify its programming, offering performances by New York’s Métropolitain Opera and the Comédie Française. Tino Rossi and Yves Montand were also seen performing on the theater floor.

8 years later, it has been given a facelift, with a much larger capacity. Lyric and dance theater, symphony concerts and music hall were all held here.

A terrace bar is hidden away on the top floor of Espace St-Denis.

Since summer 2020, Salle 2 has undergone a complete transformation that has completely changed the interior of the venue. The lobby and façade were completely demolished to make way for the new Studio-Cabaret, which opened in September 2022.

Located on the roof of the Studio-Cabaret lobby, Le Marie-Louise is a popular meeting place for visitors to the Latin Quarter and Espace St-Denis patrons. This terrace bar is accessible via the complex, before or after a performance, without having to set foot outside. What’s more, Le Molière par Mousso is also integrated into Espace St-Denis. Elegant, affordable and gourmet, this Parisian brasserie-style restaurant complements the complex’s food offerings.

The redesign of the Théâtre St-Denis will begin in 2024. The grand dame of the Quartier des spectacles, inaugurated on March 4, 1916, will undergo a veritable rejuvenation. While respecting its architectural heritage, we’ll be adding contemporary comforts. Period ornamental details will be preserved, as will the old-fashioned chandeliers and orchestra pit. State-of-the-art acoustics, spacious dressing rooms and elevators are all part of the plans for this spectacular renovation.
